The Big Woods property is a Nature Preserve owned by, and monitored by the staff of, the Adirondack Chapter of the Nature Conservancy. With authorization from the Conservancy, Champlain Area Trails created a meandering trail system that touches different aspects of the varying environments within the property. Walk riverside, deep-woods, former logging road paths that loop around the property.
The Town and the Nature Conservancy are currently in the process of making this a "Community Preserve". The Town will be working with the Conservancy to determine a future plan of action.

What's at Big Woods?
Written by Doug Munro of ADK TNC
Big Woods is a 110 acre preserve protecting a ½ mile of shoreline along the Boquet River. Some of the ecological highlights that Big Woods has to offer include many exemplary natural communities or best examples of these natural communities in the New York State. These communities include three riverine communities: the main channel stream, riverside ice meadow, and riverside sand/gravel bar. The sand/beach community at the river’s delta is another exemplary community. The floodplain forest along the shoreline is of very high quality. Rare species on the property include Superb Jewelweed Damselfly, Brook Snaketail Dragonfly, and American Rubyspot Damselfly. The property offers just over two miles of walking/hiking trails which can be accessed from the Willsboro Sate Boat Launch or behind the Champlain Valley Senior Community Center.
